Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease, commonly referred to as gum disease, or bleeding gums, is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. It can be prevented from occurring. Great numbers of bacteria accumulate in the mouth, and when their numbers become sufficient and they are organized in colonies, disease occurs. This accumulation of bacteria is commonly referred to as plaque. Plaque, when accumulated along the gum line, will, in time, cause a break down of the filaments that hold teeth in place. They do this by excreting an acid. The best way to prevent this is to clean the gum line (referred to by professionals as the sulcus) so that a harmful accumulation of bacteria does not exist.

Brushing the teeth by itself is not enough. Flossing is also needed. Most problems occur between the teeth, and dental floss is the most effective means of disrupting and disorganizing bacterial colonies. Flossing and brushing once a day before bedtime is sufficient to prevent this disease causing accumulation. Nothing you read here will replace the advice of a dental health care specialist, so be sure to see a dentist regularly.
